Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy salvages the natural tooth rather than replacing it with a dental implant so that you eliminate pain and restore your oral health.
Save your natural tooth with root canal therapy.
If your tooth has become cracked, broken, or badly decayed, root canal therapy may be required to save the natural tooth rather than removing it and replacing it with a dental implant. The affected tooth will look and feel just as it did before it was damaged, and may last a lifetime without retreatment.
- Keep your natural smile
- Maintain normal biting sensation
- Virtually painless
- Fixed in one visit
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Root canal therapy is an important procedure used to save a natural tooth whose nerve has been affected by infection or a large cavity. It involves removing the nerve tissue of a tooth and sealing the canals with a special rubberlike material. The maintenance of the natural tooth allows you to maintain normal biting force and sensation. After root canal treatment the tooth will not be able to feel temperature changes or pain.
The treated tooth will look just like it did before, and can last as long as your undamaged teeth.
Will I need any further work after my root canal is done?
In some cases a dental crown, or cap, will be needed to prevent tooth fracture after a root canal is done.
After a root canal is done, the missing tooth structure is replaced with a filling. A tooth that has a root canal will tend to be more brittle than it was before. Normal chewing and clenching or grinding can take a toll on the tooth and these forces may cause fracture over time. Covering the tooth with a crown will minimize the risk of fracture.
If I don’t want a root canal, what other options do I have?
If you have been diagnosed as needing a root canal the other option is generally extraction.
The infected, broken down, or badly decayed tooth may be extracted, allowing the bone around it to heal. After extraction there will be a space where the tooth was. There are tooth replacement options that your Surrey dentist can recommend if you would like to replace the tooth. Sometimes not replacing an extracted tooth can cause other problems, like other teeth shifting and bone shrinking where the tooth was extracted.
