Protect your child’s developing teeth for a lifetime of happy smiles.

Children’s teeth need special attention: constantly changing and prone to cavities, young teeth can quickly present problems without proper care. Regular dental visits and a proper hygiene routine are a must to keep them healthy.

  • Monitor child’s dental development

During regularly scheduled dental appointments, your child’s teeth will receive a professional cleaning, including tartar removal and fluoride treatment. Their kids dentist will also conduct a thorough exam, monitoring development and addressing concerns.

Proper home care is especially important during childhood, so we’ll work with you to ensure you have the education you need on development, diet, pacifiers, and more. Once your child is old enough, we’ll help them get a handle on proper brushing and flossing techniques, so they can begin their own dental hygiene routine.

When should my child first visit the dentist?

Right after their first tooth comes in, or by their first birthday–whichever comes first.

How often should I come in for a cleaning?

We recommend a dental cleaning for children every 6 months.

What will I have done at my first appointment?

At your first visit you will meet Dr Cancar or Dr Kooner and they will first ask you about your concerns and priorities. The dentist will review your medical history. If you are taking medications, please bring a list of the medications and dosages you are currently taking. After we get to know a little about you we will start with a head and neck exam, and then we’ll look inside your mouth. We’ll look for any suspicious bumps or lumps, and we will chart any existing dental work. If you have recent dental x-rays let us know when you book your first visit, and we will request them from your previous dentist. The dentist will determine which additional, if any, radiographs are needed. After viewing the radiographs, a treatment plan will be made with your concerns and priorities in mind.

The dental exam is critical to your ongoing oral health.

What is your dentist looking for during a dental exam?
  • Damaged, missing or decayed teeth
  • Early signs of cavities
  • Condition of your gums, such as periodontal pockets, inflammation or other signs of gum disease (which can lead to tooth and bone loss) to see how previous dental work such as root canals, fillings and crowns are holding up
  • Early signs of mouth or throat cancer, such as white lesions or blocked salivary glands
  • Other suspicious growths or cysts
  • Position of your teeth (e.g., spacing, bite)
  • Signs that you clench or grind your teeth (a treatable problem that can cause headache or sore jaw and can, if serious, lead to hearing loss and tooth loss)
  • Signs of bleeding or inflammation on your tongue and on the roof or floor of your mouth
  • The overall health and function of your temporomandibular joint (which joins the jaw to skull), checking for signs of disorders that can cause pain or tenderness
  • The general condition of the bones in your face, jaw and around your mouth

The dental exam can catch problems early—before you see or feel them—when they are much easier and less expensive to treat.

Your dentist may explain what’s happening during the exam and give you a summary of the findings. If not, be sure to ask. As patient, you are a full partner in your oral health care.

Can I have a cleaning done at my first appointment?

Dr Kooner and Dr Cancar like to allow an hour for the first appointment. Each patient’s needs vary greatly and as such the time needed to create a treatment plan varies as well. For some patient’s it may not be ideal to start with a cleaning, so we prefer to book your cleaning after the exam is done.

How often should I get x-rays done?

X-rays are prescribed on a case-by-case basis. Dr Kooner and Dr Cancar prefer to review a patient’s dental history, and examine their mouth before deciding when and which x-rays are needed. Usually x-rays are prescribed once a year.

Do you claim insurance directly or do I have to pay upfront?

We will claim insurance directly when we can.

Do you do treatment under general anesthetic?

We do not offer treatment under general anesthetic; however we do offer conscious oral sedation to help you feel more relaxed during your dental treatment.

  • I appreciate how understanding, accommodating, and patient each Staff member is when tending to my elderly mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's. She is now getting the dental care she needs after years of refusing to go to a dentist.

  • Dr. Kooner and her staff are always caring and helpful.  They're always able to put me at ease while getting dental work done. Thank you!

  • I had just moved and as always happens I had a dental emergency. I went online late in the evening requesting to be seen by a Dr. on Saturday.  I received a prompt email the very next morning followed by a phone call.  Gurvinder was awesome and answered all my questions.  1 day later a doctor was taking care of my dental emergency.  Late hours + weekend hours are perfect for me.  I will continue coming here!

  • I have been happy with the care I have received from Green Apple Dental and have recommended them to friends and family.
