During your first visit to our office, we’ll take the time to get to know you, beyond just your dental and medical history and your current concerns. If you have goals for your teeth, we can begin planning for those goals from your very first checkup.
In addition to a thorough consultation, your new Surrey dentist will conduct an exam to document your current dental health and check for any areas of concern. A cleaning is usually scheduled as your second visit, unless you and the dentist decide that there is other dental treatment that should be done first. At your cleaning our dental hygienist will remove tartar buildup, give you a fluoride treatment, and floss and polish your teeth. Your hygienist can also provide tips for proper brushing and flossing at home.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
At your first visit you will meet Dr. Cancar or Dr. Kooner and they will first ask you about your concerns and priorities. The dentist will review your medical history. If you are taking medications, please bring a list of the medications and dosages you are currently taking. After we get to know a little about you we will start with a head and neck exam, and then we’ll look inside your mouth. We’ll look for any suspicious bumps or lumps, and we will chart any existing dental work. If you have recent dental x-rays let us know when you book your first visit, and we will request them from your previous dentist. The dentist will determine which additional, if any, radiographs are needed. After viewing the radiographs, a treatment plan will be made with your concerns and priorities in mind.
The dental exam is critical to your ongoing oral health.
- Damaged, missing or decayed teeth
- Early signs of cavities
- Condition of your gums, such as periodontal pockets, inflammation or other signs of gum disease (which can lead to tooth and bone loss) to see how previous dental work such as root canals, fillings and crowns are holding up
- Early signs of mouth or throat cancer, such as white lesions or blocked salivary glands
- Other suspicious growths or cysts
- Position of your teeth (e.g., spacing, bite)
- Signs that you clench or grind your teeth (a treatable problem that can cause headache or sore jaw and can, if serious, lead to hearing loss and tooth loss)
- Signs of bleeding or inflammation on your tongue and on the roof or floor of your mouth
- The overall health and function of your temporomandibular joint (which joins the jaw to skull), checking for signs of disorders that can cause pain or tenderness
- The general condition of the bones in your face, jaw and around your mouth
The dental exam can catch problems early—before you see or feel them—when they are much easier and less expensive to treat.
Your dentist may explain what’s happening during the exam and give you a summary of the findings. If not, be sure to ask. As patient, you are a full partner in your oral health care.
Dr. Kooner and Dr. Cancar like to allow an hour for the first appointment. Each patient’s needs vary greatly and as such the time needed to create a treatment plan varies as well. For some patient’s it may not be ideal to start with a cleaning, so we prefer to book your cleaning after the exam is done.
X-rays are prescribed on a case-by-case basis. Dr. Kooner and Dr. Cancar prefer to review a patient’s dental history, and examine their mouth before deciding when and which x-rays are needed. Usually x-rays are prescribed once a year.
We recommend a dental exam and cleaning every 6 months. Some patients require more frequent cleanings. Improving your oral hygiene routine at home will aide in improving your oral health, and will require less time at your hygiene visits.
We will claim insurance directly when we can.
We do not offer treatment under general anesthetic; however we do offer conscious oral sedation to help you feel more relaxed during your dental treatment.
Although Dr. Cancar and Dr. Kooner prefer to have a full hour for the initial examination, they understand that this may not work for everyone. If you would like your cleaning on the first visit, and have been seeing a dentist on a regular basis, we can book you for a 30 minute limited exam. Please let our receptionist know, in advance, so that we can request your x-rays from any dental office you have recently visited.
Yes we can. Please let our receptionist know the name of any dental offices you have recently visited and we will contact them. We may need written authorization to transfer the x-rays to our office.
